What to do when hiring slows down 🫠

Hey Reader,

The job market has been exhausting these past couple of years.

From mass layoffs to hiring freezes, it feels like job seekers have been stuck in a broken loop. 😵‍💫

But just like with many things in life, the only way out… is through.

That’s why I’m in your inbox every week — to help you adapt to the new normal in the job market and build the (new) skills you need to land a well-paid, fulfilling Customer Success role.

And today I want to help you prepare for one of the most natural parts of the hiring cycle: the summer slowdown.

Now, I’m not an oracle. 🔮 And honestly, the job market has been so unpredictable lately that who knows — maybe this summer, companies will finally get their 💩 together, hiring will keep trending up, and things will be great.

But if we’re relying on past patterns, it’s safe to say that July and August tend to be slower months for hiring.

Here’s my hot take, though:

Just because other people are taking a break doesn’t mean you should too.

If anything, this might be the best time to get ahead of the job seekers you’re competing with.

So here’s what you can do over the next couple of months to get the leverage that will help you land your dream CS job FAST:

👉 Manage your expectations

There’s nothing you can do about recruiters or hiring managers going on vacation or companies taking forever to move candidates through the pipeline.

But when you expect delays, it’s easier not to take them personally.

Knowing that there are just other factors at play can help you stay grounded instead of assuming your application got ignored or that you did something wrong.

(And yes — we could talk for hours about broken hiring systems, ghosting, and all of that… but for now, let’s just focus on the summer slowdowns specifically and what you can do to move forward this season.)

👉 Keep expanding your network

When other people assume “it’s not worth it to reach out right now,” it means inboxes are quieter.

So if you do reach out to a hiring manager or reconnect with a decision maker on LinkedIn, your message is more likely to be seen.

The summer months can be a great time to build relationships, especially if your outreach is warm, specific, and intentional.

👉 Beef up your resume and application materials

When hiring teams are back in full swing, you don’t want to be starting from scratch.

Use this time to get yourself ready – tighten up your resume, clean up your LinkedIn, and practice your outreach strategy.

Need help with the resume part? You can start by watching the free resume training on my website.

Or if you’re worried about passing the first-round interviews you’ve got lined up, check out my free behavioral interview training.

But look, Reader, landing interviews and passing the first round is only part of it.

You don’t land offers unless you nail the ENTIRE interview process, and in this chaotic job market, that means knowing how to tell your story, connect your experience to the role, and show up with confidence.

Personalized, 1:1 coaching can help you finally land that high-paying, ideal-fit CS job offer, so if you want to hear what working with me individually could look like, fill out this form, and I’ll reach out to chat.

You’ve got this, Reader.

The market may fluctuate, but with the right mindset, strategy, and support system, you can still hit your goals.

And I’m always just an email or LinkedIn DM away if you have any questions.

To your success,

Carly

Hey Reader, One of the hardest things to watch as a career coach is amazing people getting knocked down in their job search because they can’t figure out how to adapt to this crazy new job market. Because here’s the truth: these days, you can be the perfect match on paper for a role… and still not get anywhere. 😐 That was the situation A.P. was in when she first reached out. She came to us after months of applying, with only two interviews under her belt. She kept saying, “But my background...

Hey Reader, We can all agree that the job market has been…chaotic these past couple of years, right? The wildest thing? Every job posting seems to get hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants. Sure, half of them are “spray and pray” applications sent to every open job on the internet, but still, the numbers can be intimidating. So, who are the people who actually land these roles? 🤔 Well, my team and I speak directly with CS hiring managers on a regular basis, and they all say that the...

Hey Reader, Have you noticed that we humans are obsessed with growth – in our lives, in our careers, in our bank accounts? But lately I’ve been wondering… what if growth doesn’t always mean more? What if it just means different? I’ve been wrestling with this idea my whole life. People have always challenged some of my choices and guilt-tripped me in the name of growth. Like the time I left a big enterprise company to join a small startup. “Isn’t that a step back?” they asked. Honestly? It was...
